Catholic Charities: Diocese of Lubbock

Approx. Time Spent: 2 hours
Service
Date: November 18, 2012

During the volunteer work with my church's youth group, I wanted to develop more of a bond with other youths who were equally strong believers of their faith, like me.  We went to the Catholic Charities Diocese of Lubbock and helped pack the food supplies into galloon freezer bags in order to allow low income families still be able to eat.  I also brought cans that would be in use for other families especially during this time of the year.  So many families are struggling to barely have ends meet, and the fact that I could somehow help them, made me feel good about myself.  Even though I still had homework the following day, I felt accomplished that I helped out rather than just doing homework.  With this experience, I was able to meet new people and I became aware of different opportunities to be more involved in the community.  This project in particular made me more thankful of everything I have, and not to complain because there are others who are not as blessed.

CAS PROJECT (Progress).

MATERIALS:
-various colored bottle caps
-nail polish
-drill
-ribbon
-glue
-paper
-pictures (cut in circles- size of the bottle cap)

PROGRESS:
I plan to sell keychains, necklaces or bracelets out of recyclable bottle caps and add pictures I have taken at the Henry Doorly Zoo into the center. Then finish off with a nail polish coat. I will then drill holes and add ribbon so the bottlecaps can be used as a necklace, bracelet.

IDEAS:
In order to make different types of accessories with the bottlecaps and still get profit to donate/ adopt an animal.  I plan to zoom in the same picture and make a three bottle cap keychain linked with each other and connect them with ribbon. For example, the picture of the beetles, we will have a zoomed picture of a beetle and the middle botte cap with a picture will be the orange, and the final/bottom bottle cap will be the entire picture.

Hispanic Association of Women Christmas Special Invitation

Approx. Time Spent: 1.5 hours
Service
Date: November 13, 2012

I planned to make an invitation in order to inform and persuade people to join a Christmas event.  Making the Hispanic Association of Women Christmas Special invitation allows to do something for them because the Hispanic Association of Women has done so much for the Lubbock community.  I based the designs on the decorations the host will be using at this event held at her home. While making the invitation, I struggled finding the perfect font that would still look elegant but not overpower the invitation design.  By making this invitation, I was able to help Rosa Llanas and the rest of the Hispanic Association of Women.  They will just relax and enjoy the event.  This deed made me appreciate the technology I had and the opportunity to be able to use them.

CAS Project Idea

When I visited the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska in early June (June 3). I saw that the majority of the zoo's facilities is funded by donations.  The zoo is very clean and really nice.  I wanted to do a CAS project that gives back to the community and spread awareness in order to preserve the zoo.  I contacted a zoo coordinator and said that any type of donation is appreciated. There are many ways to help such as "adopt an animal" or simply give a money donation.  A friend and I are considering on holding bake sales, showcase an exhibit based on an animal theme and making/selling bead key chains throughout the school year in hopes to give the profits to the zoo. I took pictures of the zoo of the animals for approximately 3 hours.  I plan to make accessories with the pictures I took or sell my portraits in different sizes.

Sewing Classes

Approx Time Spent: 4 hours (every Wednesday on June 6-June 27)
Creative

During my sewing classes, I am able to be creative in different ways and become more artistic and aware how much knowing basic knowledge is helpful.  As I sew, I learn to be patient as I am new at sewing and I learn to extend my horizon by doing a different project during every class.  With every lesson, there is a different project and I learn to strengthen my sewing skills.  In the beginning of every class, we begin practicing on patterns on papers with no thread on the sewing machine and try to sew within the lines.  The lessons take place from 10 AM to 1 PM at Bernina's Sewing Studio which helps me to be productive during the summer.

Approx Time Spent: 1 hour (every Tuesday & Thursday (if I have time))

In kickboxing, I learn to be more confident and aggressive in my daily life. In kickboxing, I am taught how to be able to defend myself, and the basics of kickboxing.  Everything starts of with the basics and then you then extend your knowledge and your different techniques as you practice and train more in the dojo. The lessons take place during the evening (6:30-7:30) and help me with time management as well.

Photo shoots/taking picture of events

Approx. Time Spent: (varies depending on the photo shoot)
Creative

Every time I have a photo shoot, I am determined to capture the model's personality and not have them be completely stiff throughout the photo shoots. Before starting taking pictures, I would drive around Lubbock in hopes of finding unique locations for the backgrounds of my pictures. From driving around Lubbock, I have found locations in places you wouldn't normally expect, like in down town Lubbock and the outskirts of Lubbock and nearby counties. I felt accomplished finding these locations because I want my photographs to be different, not entirely look the same as the other photos. If I were the model, I would want my pictures to hopefully not look similar to the other people who had their pictures taken. With that in mind, I learn to be able to regulate and learn that I need to have the ability to determine which locations to use for some and which not to use for others.  I am glad to be able to take pictures for different events, because I get to challenge myself to take pictures from different perspectives.  Another thing I learned is to look at other photographer's example, so it will spark an idea and I will be able to interpret a photograph to my own style.

Diverge Salon Ribbon Cutting and make Ribbon Cutting Poster

Approx Time: 4 hours
Service
Date: February 24, 2011

I was given the opportunity to be part of a business' ribbon cutting and make the poster.  My previous business management teacher, Rosa Llanas, gave me the opportunity to be part of it and I was excited to be part of it because I love fashion and when I was little, I used to always be part of it.  A week or two before I made the ribbon cutting poster announcing the event. Mrs. Llanas had asked me to make the poster and have it be spiral/bubbly yet elegant.  I didn't make the poster exactly how Mrs. Llanas wanted it to be, but I made the poster be simplistic yet elegant.  The poster was a lighter gray color with a red model that I got from a hair model brush for photoshop.  My design was approved by the owner of the salon, and I was so relieved.  This event allowed me to see how the cosmotology business worked.  I had talked to the owner afterwards and she was conversing with me with her experience with Mrs. Llanas in business management class and cosmotology and how hard work and determiantion pays off in the long run.  I took pictures of the event in hopes to broaden my experience for my photography business. I felt determined to achieve more in life through connections in the community of Lubbock.

Hispanic Association of Women Scholarship Banquet

Approx. Time Spent: 4 hours
Service
Date: October 21,2011

I planned to take pictures of the event to the highest of my ability to.  The Hispanic Association of Women Scholarship Banquet allowed me to realize how important the Hispanic Association of Women was because without them, some of the scholarship attendees would not be able to pay for some of their tuition or go to college.  At the end of the event, I talked with my previous Business Management teacher, Rosa Llanas and showed her the pictures I took.  By taking pictures of the event, I showed my family and friends about the association and I got people to be aware of the association.  I learned to be more social as I went around taking pictures of the guests, the members of the association and the women who got an award/scholarship.  This event made me feel like I was helping the community benefit, by letting others become aware of this organization.  That experience was interesting for me and that made me feel important or else, the organization would only have a limited amount of pictures of the event.

The Bridge of Lubbock's Harvest Shin Dig

Approx Time Spent: 5 hours
Service
Date: September 2, 2011

The Bridge of Lubbock is a non-profit organization that asked me to take pictures for their event, the Harvest Shindig in September.  The Bridge of Lubbock's mission is to bring the community agencies and ministries together under one roof. After helping at the Bridge of Lubbock's Harvest Shin Dig, I realized the importance of donations for non-profit organizations or else, the organization would not be able to spread their purpose throughout the city.  During the Harvest Shin Dig, I took pictures of the event all over in the Wind Museum. With my presence, I was able to capture the moments of the organization that they would not be able to capture otherwise.  With my help, I was able to spread the name and purpose of the Bridge of Lubbock to my family and friends who were not orginally aware of this organization.  I plan to help out more with this organization and donate my time and my ability to take pictures to help spread the word.  I felt accomplished that even though my photography business has been opened for less than a year at that time that I was able to have the opportunity to take pictures, help benefit the organization and get that far considering my age.  I hope to be working with them soon and in future events.

Piano

Approx. Time Spent: 30 minutes (every Monday, and a 2.5 hour recital after each semester (Spring and Christmas))

Creative

When I first started to play the piano, I just wanted to be able to play an instrument.  Through this process, I learned how to play chords, understand the concept of minors and majors along and distinguish the difference between each note.  By playing the piano, I managed to learn how to be creative and look into the different genres of music and composers throughout history.  I have been playing the piano since 6th grade, and I plan to continue to play it because it is also a good stress reliever. I have stayed with the same teacher for 5 years now along with my brother, and I like to think that we have grown together.  I value this activity because I am now more musically inclined compared to before I started, of course I was surrounded by pop modern music, but because of piano, I can reference classical music, which is valuable when you are trying to make documentaries, or make presentations.  Classical music can never go wrong, Mozart, Beethoven, Hadyn, and Chopin's music compositions seem to interest everyone's inteterest, no matter what.

Karate

Approx. Time Spent: 1 hour (every Wednesday and Friday during the summer/holidays)
1 hour (every Wednesday during the school year)

Active

When I first began karate, I wanted to be able to gain self awareness and be able to manage my own time.  In karate, I try to learn different katas as I advance to a new belt color and acquire new knowledge of the skills I learned. Every time I have a belt test, I feel accomplished when I realize that I know how to do all of the techniques and retained all of the knowledge from previous lessons in order to advance to my the next belt.  Being able to do karate, is a long process, this is not something to be taken lightly.  In order to do karate, one must be dedicated, willing to learn something new, and be able to manage their time.  I would like to say that because of karate, I was able to enjoy the different aspects of the art of the culture, learn to manage by time between school, my photography business, and other extra curricular activities.  In the long run, learning karate will benefit me as I learn to balance out other aspects in my life, such as work and family.  I want to continue with karate lessons, especially in order to get a black belt.
